25 Years of Girls on the Run Georgia: Stories that Shaped Us

Girls on the Run Georgia is celebrating an incredible milestone this year: 25 years of inspiring confidence in girls across Georgia! Each month, we're taking a trip down memory lane and spotlighting a person who has played a crucial role in shaping our council. From coaches and volunteers to staff and participants, these stories reflect the heart of Girls on the Run Georgia as we continue to build confidence, strength, and connections throughout Georgia communities.

This month, we’re thrilled to highlight Sierra L. Grigsby, a dedicated Girls on the Run volunteer and member and ambassador of Black Girls RUN! (BGR!). Sierra’s involvement with Girls on the Run Georgia began several years ago when she volunteered at a GOTR 5K Cheer Station. She was immediately drawn to the energy and excitement of the event, making it a tradition she looks forward to coordinating each year. For Sierra, the most meaningful moments happen at the Cheer Station as she watches her team bring joy and encouragement to every runner. “They cheer hard for EVERY runner,” Sierra shares. “In my daily life, I try to cheer hard for every person.”

Sierra is deeply involved with Black Girls RUN!, a national organization dedicated to encouraging African-American women to prioritize fitness and healthy living. Through her work with BGR!’s Atlanta chapter, Sierra has extended her impact beyond Girls on the Run, helping to create a community where women feel empowered to embrace wellness and connection. One of Sierra’s most impactful contributions to Girls on the Run Georgia came through her connection with BGR!. When the Atlanta chapter received a generous shoe donation from New Balance, a garage full of shoes, they immediately thought of how to pay it forward. Girls on the Run Georgia was at the top of their list. Sierra recalls one of her happiest days as delivering those shoes to Executive Director Lea Rolfes, knowing they would make a meaningful difference for the participants in our program. This act of kindness reflects Sierra’s dedication to empowering others and her passion for creating opportunities that uplift young girls.

Sierra’s commitment to empowerment is deeply inspired by her late mother, Gloria J. Mack. “My ANGEL Mom set the example of empowerment,” Sierra explains. “She made me feel that I could do anything. Aligning with Girls on the Run allows me to continue her legacy.” For Sierra, GOTR’s mission to nurture self-love, motivation, and teamwork resonates deeply, offering hope and strength to the next generation of girls.

Sierra’s story highlights the incredible impact of our volunteers and community partners like Black Girls RUN!. Together, we’re building a future where every girl knows her worth, embraces her potential, and feels empowered to tackle life’s challenges with confidence
