Girls on the Run Georgia announced today that alongside The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc., it will host the 21st annual LUNAFEST®, the fundraising film festival dedicated to championing women filmmakers and bringing people together in their communities, on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at the Synchronicity Theatre.

LUNAFEST features a program of short films that empower and inspire. This year’s stories are told from a variety of perspectives that champion women and gender-nonconforming individuals, highlighting their aspirations, accomplishments, resilience, strength and connection.

All proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit Girls on the Run Georgia and The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. Thus far, LUNAFEST, which is created and funded by LUNA®, has raised more than $6.5 million for nonprofit organizations, featured 170 women filmmakers and hosted over 2,700 screenings across the US and Canada.

“It is such an honor for Girls on the Run Georgia to once again co-host LUNAFEST alongside our partners at The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc,” said Tanya Frazee, Development Director, Girls on the Run Georgia. “At Girls on the Run, we envision a world where every girl is able to recognize and activate her limitless potential, and it’s so meaningful to have the opportunity to share these poignant and inspiring stories made by women who are doing just that.”

This year’s LUNAFEST features eight short films with a total running time of 80 minutes. Films include:

  • Generation Impact: The Coder (2021) – Director, Samantha Knowles
  • When You Clean a Stranger’s Home (2020) – Director, Sharon Arteaga

About Girls on the Run Georgia

Girls on the Run is a national physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The 12-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.

Since 2000, Girls on the Run Georgia (formerly Girls on the Run of Atlanta) has inspired more than 35,000 girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. Girls on the Run of Georgia proudly serves thousands of girls each year in communities in and around greater Atlanta, Athens, Central Savannah River Valley (CSRA) and North Georgia and is actively expanding in areas of Georgia that aren’t currently served by existing Girls on the Run councils.
